The campaign is over. The votes have been casts and the winner has been declared. Many of us are glad while others are distraught over the results. Me? I am disappointed who the winner is while at the same time excited about what his victory represents. When we are growing up we are always told that we can do anything if we try hard enough. Barak Obama came from modest means and made it to the White House. Along the way, he faced ferocious opposition. Defeating Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination was no small feat. The execution of his campaign puts to rest the notion, I believe, that he is too inexperienced and lacks executive experience. Whatever your beliefs in his policies, there is no denying that he has the leadership qualities to be successful.
It is time that we all come together to support our new President-Elect. He was democratically elected. That is one of the great things about America. We can’t disregard that now that the result did not turn out as we had hoped.
With that being said, there are many issues which I still have concerns about the direction that he will take the country. At the top of the lists is the moral issues, such as abortion and stem cell research. These are short-term, knee jerk “solutions” to real world problems. America can do better! Many of his recent statements concern me in that he seems willing to use the courts to make law instead of in a judicial role.
But we shall not despair. We need to strive to work with an Obama administration. We need to be more participative in the democratic process. Call and send letters to your Congressman and Senators. Work to send strong, conservative leaders to Washington and to our statehouses. Take back the power that so many seem willing to delegate to our elected officials. Remember they work for us.
