Still angry and looking for a “whipping boy”
Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.) chose an interesting term to describe the results of last nights election. In past monarchies, the “whipping boys” were punished in the place of princes’ who failed to follow rules. The strategy worked and the prince’s behavior was corrected based on the bond that developed between the prince and his whipping boy.
I am not sure that we have that same situation here. Sure, there are members of the House and Senate who think of themselves as royalty but I do not see the bond with Martha Coakley. Before the results were in, the finger pointing had begun. Many placed the blame on Coakley and her campaign rather than on any action that they had taken or failed to take.
While there will be some members of Congress who realize that the electorate is demanding a new direction, a large number will continue along the same path as long as their position is safe without regard to any “whipping boy”.
